Transformation Exercise : Using Adobe Photoshop

1. Setting up Photoshop

Open Photoshop Application

You will be using Tools, Layers & Options palettes. All other palettes should be closed.

To Show or Hide palettes go to the Windows Menu

[see Screenshot 01]

2. Opening file & Selecting Layer

File > Open ExM1_360sq.psd ( or ExM2_360sq.psd or ExM3_360sq.psd )

In the Tools palette select the Move Tool.

In the Options Palette make sure the "Auto Select Layer" & "Show Bounding Box" is selected.

[see Screenshot 02]

Select the shape (in this case the blue Bird) that you want to transform with the Move Tool. It should then have a Bounding Box around it like the blue Bird in [Screenshot 02]

3. Transforming Layer

Next go to the Edit menu

Edit > Transform > Rotate 90o CW

[see Screenshot 03]

After you have committed this transformation the 2 Birds should tessellate. [see Screen shot 04]

4. Duplicating Layer

Using the Move Tool select the brown Bird then go to

Layer > Duplicate Layer…

[see Screen shot 05]

You will then get a dialog box called "Duplicate Layer".
[see Screen shot 06]

Here you can name the layer in the "As" field. Click OK to duplicate the Layer. You should not need to change anything in the destination region of the dialog box.

5. Moving Layer

You will not be able to see the Duplicate Layer because it occupies the same space as the original.

Use the Move Tool with the mouse to move the Duplicate so it tessellates with the existing two shapes.

[see Screen shot 07]

6. Repeating steps 3,4,5 to complete exercise

Repeat in this order:

First 5-Duplicate (a Layer)
Second 4-Move (this Layer)
Third 3-Transform (Transform this Layer so is tessellates)

The completed exercise should end up looking like [see Screen shot 08]

You should end up with 17 Layers in the photoshop file including the "Background"
